Privacy Policy

How My Iceland handles your information.

Last updated: 1 September 2026

My Iceland is a travel planning and information app created by Icelandic Adventure.

We take your privacy seriously and have designed My Iceland so that much of the information you add to the app remains stored locally on your device.

This Privacy Policy explains what information My Iceland accesses, what information may be transmitted from your device, why it is used, and the choices available to you.

1. Information stored on your device

My Iceland allows you to personalise and organise your Iceland trip. Information you enter into these features is primarily stored locally on your device using application storage.

  • Your first name;
  • Trip arrival and departure dates;
  • Travel preferences and interests;
  • Travel mode;
  • Who you are travelling with;
  • Travel pace and other personalisation preferences;
  • Saved places;
  • Itinerary information;
  • Bookings and reservation details you manually add;
  • Packing list progress;
  • Places you mark as visited;
  • Iceland Passport information;
  • Place ratings;
  • Notification preferences;
  • App appearance and other preferences.

This information is used to provide the app’s planning, personalisation and organisational features.

My Iceland does not currently require you to create an account.

Your locally stored trip information is not automatically uploaded to an Icelandic Adventure account or cloud profile.

Some limited information described below may, however, be transmitted when you use features such as live local conditions or push notifications.

2. Location information

My Iceland can optionally use your device’s location to provide information relevant to where you are, including local weather and travel conditions.

Location access is optional.

When you choose to use a feature requiring your location, My Iceland may request permission from your device to access your foreground location.

Your latitude and longitude may then be transmitted to an Icelandic Adventure server to retrieve relevant information such as local weather conditions.

My Iceland does not require continuous background location access and is not designed to continuously track your movements.

You can withdraw location permission at any time through your device settings. If location access is unavailable, some features may instead display information for a default location such as Reykjavík.

3. Push notifications

My Iceland offers optional push notifications for information such as:

  • Aurora conditions;
  • Weather;
  • Daily weather briefings;
  • Road conditions;
  • Geological activity;
  • Trip reminders;
  • Nearby places;
  • Saved places; and
  • Selected offers or other notifications where enabled.

If you enable push notifications, My Iceland uses the Expo notification service to obtain a push notification token for your device.

To operate and personalise these notifications, My Iceland may transmit the following information to Icelandic Adventure’s server:

  • An app-generated installation identifier;
  • Your Expo push notification token;
  • Your device platform, such as iOS or Android;
  • The installed app version;
  • Whether notifications are enabled;
  • Your selected notification preferences;
  • Your chosen quiet hours;
  • Your trip arrival and departure dates;
  • Your selected travel mode; and
  • Your selected Iceland travel interests.

This information is used to register your device for notifications and determine which notifications are relevant to your trip and preferences.

Your first name, bookings, full itinerary, packing list, saved-place list and Iceland Passport history are not included in the push registration information currently sent by the app.

You can disable individual notification categories within My Iceland and can withdraw notification permission through your device settings.

4. Live information and Icelandic Adventure services

My Iceland connects to Icelandic Adventure services to provide features including live or regularly updated:

  • Weather information;
  • Aurora information;
  • Road information;
  • Currency information; and
  • Travel guide content.

When the app connects to these services, normal technical information associated with an internet request may also be processed by the servers and hosting infrastructure involved in delivering the service. This may include information such as an IP address, request time, device or network information made available through the connection and the requested resource.

We use this information as necessary to provide and secure the requested service.

5. Third-party services

My Iceland uses technologies and services provided by third parties to operate parts of the app.

Expo

My Iceland is built using Expo and uses Expo services for functionality including push notifications.

Where you enable push notifications, an Expo push token is generated and used to deliver notifications to your device.

Push delivery may also involve the notification services provided by your device platform, including Apple Push Notification service (APNs) or Firebase Cloud Messaging (FCM), as applicable.

Apple and Google

If you download My Iceland through the Apple App Store or Google Play, Apple or Google may process information relating to your download, device and use of their store or platform services according to their own privacy policies.

Operating-system services are also used to manage permissions such as location and notifications.

6. External websites and booking partners

My Iceland contains links to external websites and services.

These may include tourism businesses, attractions, accommodation providers, activity providers, transport providers, official Icelandic information services and booking platforms.

Some links may be affiliate links.

Current or potential external booking and travel partners linked from the app may include services such as GetYourGuide, Expedia, Arctic Adventures, Blue Car Rental, CampEasy and Saily.

When you choose to open an external website or booking service, you leave My Iceland and the privacy practices of that third party apply.

Icelandic Adventure does not control how those external services collect or process information.

We recommend reviewing the privacy policy of any third-party service before providing personal or payment information.

7. Affiliate links

Some links within My Iceland are affiliate links.

If you click an affiliate link and make a purchase or booking, Icelandic Adventure may receive a commission or other benefit from the third-party provider at no additional cost to you.

Any information you provide while completing a booking or purchase on a third-party website is provided directly to that provider and is subject to its own privacy policy.

My Iceland does not receive your payment card details simply because you follow an affiliate link.

8. Payments and bookings

My Iceland allows you to manually record booking information for your own travel organisation.

Booking information entered into the My Bookings feature is stored locally on your device.

My Iceland does not currently process travel payments directly within the app.

Where you choose to make a booking through an external provider, the transaction takes place with that provider and is governed by that provider’s terms and privacy practices.

9. Analytics and advertising tracking

The current version of My Iceland does not intentionally include a third-party advertising network or behavioural advertising SDK.

We do not use your My Iceland activity to track you across apps or websites owned by other companies for targeted advertising.

If this changes in a future version, this Privacy Policy and the relevant app-store privacy disclosures will be updated.

10. How we use information

Where information is processed by My Iceland or Icelandic Adventure, it may be used to:

  • Provide the features you request;
  • Personalise your Iceland travel experience;
  • Provide local weather and travel information;
  • Provide push notifications you have enabled;
  • Maintain notification preferences;
  • Provide and secure our online services;
  • Diagnose technical problems;
  • Maintain and improve My Iceland; and
  • Comply with legal obligations where applicable.

We do not sell your personal information to data brokers.

11. Data retention

Information stored locally within My Iceland generally remains on your device until:

  • You delete or change it;
  • You use the app’s reset functionality;
  • You clear the app’s data through your device; or
  • You uninstall the app, subject to the behaviour of your device’s operating system and backups.

Information associated with push notification registration may remain on Icelandic Adventure’s systems for as long as reasonably necessary to provide notification functionality, maintain the service and meet applicable legal or security requirements.

Where information is no longer required for these purposes, we aim to delete or anonymise it.

Technical server records may be retained for a reasonable period for security, troubleshooting and service administration.

12. Deleting your information

You can remove locally stored My Iceland information using the app’s Reset My Iceland functionality.

This removes locally stored app information such as your trip, saved places, preferences and other My Iceland data from the app on that device.

You may also remove the app from your device.

Location and notification permissions can be withdrawn through your device’s operating-system settings.

If you would like to ask us about information held on Icelandic Adventure’s servers, including information associated with push notification registration, you can contact us using the details below.

We may need reasonable information to identify the relevant installation or request before server-side information can be located or deleted.

13. Your privacy rights

Depending on where you live, data-protection law may give you rights relating to personal information we hold about you.

These may include rights to:

  • Ask what personal information we hold about you;
  • Request correction of inaccurate information;
  • Request deletion of information;
  • Object to or restrict certain processing;
  • Withdraw consent where processing is based on consent; and
  • Make a complaint to the relevant data-protection authority.

These rights may be subject to legal exceptions.

If you are in the United Kingdom, you may also have the right to complain to the Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO).

14. Children’s privacy

My Iceland is a general travel planning application and is not specifically designed or directed towards children.

We do not knowingly use the app to intentionally collect personal information from children for advertising or profiling purposes.

Parents or guardians who believe that a child has provided information to us that should be removed may contact us.

15. Security

We take reasonable technical and organisational measures to protect information processed through My Iceland and Icelandic Adventure services.

However, no internet transmission, electronic storage system or device can be guaranteed to be completely secure.

You are responsible for maintaining appropriate security on your own device, particularly where you choose to store travel booking or itinerary information within the app.

16. International processing

Some technology providers used to operate My Iceland may process information outside the United Kingdom.

Where personal information is transferred internationally, we will seek to use appropriate safeguards where required by applicable data-protection law.

Third-party services you independently choose to access through external links may operate under their own international data-transfer arrangements.

17. Changes to this Privacy Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy when My Iceland changes, when we introduce new functionality, when our service providers change or when legal or regulatory requirements change.

The latest version will be made available through My Iceland and the Icelandic Adventure website.

The date at the top of this policy indicates when it was last updated.
