Small Car, SUV or 4×4?
There isn’t one perfect Iceland rental car for everyone. The sensible choice depends on season, route, passengers and what you actually plan to do.
Small / Standard Car
Often perfectly suitable for straightforward trips using Iceland’s main roads, especially during milder conditions and for travellers who don’t need lots of luggage space.

The sensible choice when your route genuinely requires four-wheel drive, including many F-roads and more demanding itineraries.

Don’t choose a vehicle purely from an itinerary headline. Check the actual roads you’ll be using and whether your rental agreement allows them.
A 4×4 doesn’t make poor weather safe. If conditions deteriorate, changing your plans can still be the sensible option.
Many Icelandic mountain roads have vehicle restrictions and seasonal closures. Always verify requirements before entering them.
Check boot capacity as well as passenger seats. Four adults and four large suitcases can make an otherwise suitable car uncomfortable very quickly.
