Hrútey liegt im Fluss Blanda, direkt neben der Ringstraße. Eine Fußgängerbrücke ermöglicht normalerweise einen bequemen Zugang zu den Wanderwegen über die Insel, deren Vegetation und Vogelwelt für einen so leicht zugänglichen Ort ungewöhnlich vielfältig sind.
