Grjótaþorpið
Atmospheric cluster of some of Reykjavík’s oldest streets and colourful timber houses tucked between the centre and Old Harbour.
About Grjótaþorpið
Grjótaþorpið is one of the oldest surviving neighbourhoods in Reykjavík. Its narrow streets and small timber houses preserve a very different scale from the modern capital surrounding them. The district grew close to Reykjavík’s original settlement and harbour and is ideal for a quiet wander between Aðalstræti and the Old Harbour.
Our practical tips
✓Wander rather than navigating directly to one building — the neighbourhood itself is the attraction.
✓Combine it with Aðalstræti, Austurvöllur and the Old Harbour.
✓Remember these are residential streets as well as historic sights.
