About Jökuldalsheiði
Jökuldalsheiði was settled during the nineteenth century despite its harsh climate and isolation. The 1875 Askja eruption devastated much of the settlement and contributed to emigration to North America, although some farms were later resettled. The last permanently occupied farm was abandoned in 1946. Today the heath is a quiet landscape of mountain lakes, historic ruins and seasonal gravel roads.
Our practical tips
✓Do not judge journey times by distance alone on the gravel roads.
✓Sænautasel and Skessugarður are the two easiest specific attractions to build into a drive across the heath.
✓Carry food, water and warm clothing even on a summer visit.
Getting there and visiting
Access
Road 907 and connecting gravel roads cross the area. Access is seasonal and road conditions should be checked before travelling.
