Kirkjufell
One of Iceland’s most recognisable mountains, especially when viewed beside nearby Kirkjufellsfoss.
About Kirkjufell
Kirkjufell rises dramatically beside Grundarfjörður and has become one of Iceland’s most photographed landscapes. The classic view combines the mountain with Kirkjufellsfoss in the foreground.
Our practical tips
✓The classic photograph is taken from the Kirkjufellsfoss side rather than directly beneath the mountain.
✓This can be a fantastic aurora location when skies are dark and clear.
✓Expect the main viewpoint to be busy during popular travel periods.
Getting there and visiting
Access
The main viewpoint is beside the road near Grundarfjörður. Winter conditions can still make local roads and paths icy.
Walking
A short walk from the visitor parking area reaches the classic waterfall viewpoints.
Visit notes
The sightseeing viewpoint is separate from attempting to climb Kirkjufell itself.
