Laugavegur
Reykjavík’s best-known central street, packed with shops, restaurants, cafés, bars, colourful buildings and street life.
About Laugavegur
Laugavegur forms the main commercial spine of central Reykjavík. Its name translates approximately as Washing Road, recalling the route once taken towards geothermal washing pools in Laugardalur. Today it is lined with Icelandic design stores, souvenir shops, bakeries, cafés, restaurants and bars and forms the natural backbone of a walk through downtown Reykjavík.
Our practical tips
✓Use Laugavegur as part of a wider walking route rather than treating it as a single attraction.
✓Many of the best independent shops are mixed between tourist-oriented stores.
✓The atmosphere changes considerably after dark when the street becomes part of Reykjavík’s nightlife district.
