About Melrakkaslétta
Melrakkaslétta is one of the least populated landscapes in Iceland. Its open horizons, wetlands, lakes, rich birdlife and abandoned farms give it a distinctly Arctic character. Roads away from the main settlements are considerably quieter and rougher than Iceland’s main touring routes.
Our practical tips
✓Allow much more time than the distance suggests.
✓Fill up with fuel and carry food and water before exploring the quieter roads.
✓The landscape is particularly impressive during the midnight-sun period.
Getting there and visiting
Access
Remote roads around the peninsula can be rough and conditions vary. Services and mobile reception are limited away from Kópasker and Raufarhöfn.
