One of Iceland’s most spectacular waterfalls, dropping around 60 metres from the cliffs of the former coastline.

About Skógafoss (Skogafoss)

Skógafoss is one of the classic South Coast stops. You can walk right towards the base of the waterfall or climb the staircase beside it for views from above. On sunny days, the spray frequently creates rainbows in front of the falls.

Walk towards the waterfall if conditions are safe — the scale is much more impressive from close up.

The staircase beside the falls leads to a completely different view from above.

Waterproof clothing is useful if you plan to get close to the waterfall.

Getting there and visiting

Access

Located just off Iceland’s Ring Road and normally accessible by standard vehicles.

Walking

A short walk from the parking area to the waterfall. A long staircase leads to the viewpoint above.

Visit notes

The area immediately around the waterfall can be wet and slippery, especially during winter.
