Selon la tradition islandaise, Ingólfur Arnarson aurait établi sa ferme dans la région de Reykjavik vers 874 après J.-C., après que les piliers de son siège aient été, selon la légende, rejetés sur le rivage. Le monument d'Einar Jónsson dédié à Ingólfur se dresse fièrement sur Arnarhóll, dominant le centre-ville et le port.
