ICELAND TRAVEL GUIDE

The Complete Golden Circle Guide (2026)

Updated

by Icelandic Adventure

If you’re visiting Iceland for the first time, the Golden Circle is almost certainly going to be at the top of your itinerary—and for good reason.

This famous driving route takes you to three of Iceland’s most iconic attractions: Þingvellir National Park, Geysir Geothermal Area and Gullfoss Waterfall. Along the way, you’ll also find volcanic craters, hidden waterfalls, geothermal lagoons and some incredible local food stops.

The best part? It’s only around 300 km (190 miles) as a complete loop from Reykjavík, making it the perfect day trip.

We’ve driven the Golden Circle ourselves and can honestly say it’s one of the best introductions to Iceland.

Here’s everything you need to know before you go.

What is the Golden Circle?

The Golden Circle is Iceland’s most famous sightseeing route, located just east of Reykjavík.

It connects three major attractions:

  • Þingvellir National Park
  • Geysir Geothermal Area
  • Gullfoss Waterfall

Most visitors complete the route in a single day, although we’d recommend taking your time and adding a few extra stops along the way.

How Long Does It Take?

Without stopping, the drive takes around 3½ to 4 hours.

Realistically, you’ll want:

8–10 hours

This gives you enough time to enjoy each attraction, stop for photographs and visit some of the lesser-known locations nearby.

Trust us—you’ll stop far more often than you expect.

Stop 1 – Þingvellir National Park

Distance from Reykjavík:

Around 45 minutes

Þingvellir (Thingvellir) is one of Iceland’s most historically and geographically significant places.

It’s where:

  • Iceland’s first parliament was established in AD 930.
  • The North American and Eurasian tectonic plates slowly drift apart.
  • Some of Iceland’s best walking trails can be found.

Don’t miss:

  • Öxarárfoss Waterfall
  • Almannagjá Gorge
  • Silfra Fissure
  • The visitor centre

It’s an incredible place to start your Golden Circle adventure.

Stop 2 – Geysir Geothermal Area

Driving time:

Around 45 minutes from Þingvellir.

This is one of Iceland’s most active geothermal areas.

Although the original Great Geysir rarely erupts today, neighbouring Strokkur steals the show.

Every 5–10 minutes, Strokkur sends boiling water up to 20–30 metres into the air.

You’ll also find:

  • Bubbling mud pools
  • Steam vents
  • Colourful geothermal landscapes

It’s impossible not to stand there waiting for “just one more eruption.”

Stop 3 – Gullfoss Waterfall

Just 10 minutes from Geysir is one of Iceland’s most famous waterfalls.

Gullfoss (The Golden Falls) crashes dramatically into a deep canyon in two stages.

Depending on the weather, you’ll often experience:

  • Rainbows
  • Spray
  • Snow-covered viewpoints
  • Frozen edges during winter

It’s one of the most powerful waterfalls we’ve ever seen.

Allow at least an hour here—you’ll want it.

Hidden Gems Along the Golden Circle

Most visitors stick to the main attractions, but there are plenty of fantastic extra stops.

Kerið Crater

A beautiful volcanic crater filled with bright blue water.

The red volcanic rock creates one of Iceland’s most photogenic landscapes.

Friðheimar Tomato Farm

One of our favourite lunch stops.

Enjoy freshly made tomato soup, pasta and other dishes served inside a greenhouse surrounded by tomato plants.

It’s a unique experience you’ll remember long after your trip.

Secret Lagoon

If you’d like a geothermal bathing experience without the crowds of the Blue Lagoon, Secret Lagoon is a fantastic option.

It’s one of Iceland’s oldest natural swimming pools and feels much more traditional.

Brúarfoss Waterfall

Known as “Iceland’s Bluest Waterfall”, Brúarfoss is becoming increasingly popular thanks to its stunning turquoise water.

It’s a short walk from the car park and well worth adding to your itinerary.

Can You Drive It Yourself?

Absolutely.

In fact, we’d recommend it.

Having your own car allows you to:

  • Start early.
  • Beat the coach tours.
  • Stop wherever you like.
  • Spend longer at your favourite attractions.

We’ve always had excellent experiences with Blue Car Rental and would happily recommend them for exploring Iceland.

Should You Visit in Winter?

Definitely.

The Golden Circle is beautiful throughout the year.

Winter offers:

  • Snow-covered landscapes.
  • Frozen waterfalls.
  • Smaller crowds.
  • A chance of seeing the Northern Lights afterwards.

Just remember that driving conditions can be more challenging.

Allow extra time and always check the weather before setting off.

Campervan or Hotel?

The Golden Circle is also an excellent route for campervan travellers.

We explored Iceland with CampEasy, and having complete flexibility made road trips far more enjoyable.

Our Tips for Visiting the Golden Circle

  • Start early to avoid the crowds.
  • Wear waterproof clothing.
  • Bring a camera—there are photo opportunities everywhere.
  • Pack snacks and water.
  • Allow more time than Google Maps suggests.
  • Visit Kerið and Brúarfoss if you can.
  • Don’t rush—it’s one of Iceland’s most scenic drives.

Is the Golden Circle Worth It?

Without question.

Yes, it’s Iceland’s most popular tourist route—but there’s a reason for that.

Nowhere else gives you such an incredible introduction to Iceland’s waterfalls, geothermal activity, dramatic landscapes and fascinating history in a single day.

Whether it’s your first visit or your fifth, the Golden Circle never disappoints.

Final Thoughts

The Golden Circle is the perfect way to experience some of Iceland’s most iconic attractions, whether you’re visiting for a long weekend or beginning an unforgettable Ring Road adventure.

Take your time, enjoy the journey and don’t be afraid to explore beyond the three main stops.

Some of our favourite memories came from the hidden gems we discovered along the way.

Happy travels, and enjoy every mile of your Golden Circle adventure!
