About Hafnarhólmi
Hafnarhólmi is a small islet beside Borgarfjörður Eystri harbour and one of Iceland’s easiest places to see Atlantic puffins safely. Purpose-built stairs, paths and viewing areas allow close views without walking across nesting burrows. Puffins are normally present from around mid-April until early August, alongside kittiwakes, fulmars, common eiders and other seabirds.

✓Visit during the puffin season rather than assuming birds are present year-round.
✓Early morning and evening can be particularly rewarding for bird activity.
✓Stay on the constructed paths to protect fragile burrows.
Getting there and visiting
Access
Located around 5 km beyond Bakkagerði at the end of Road 94. Puffins are seasonal even though the harbour itself can be visited outside their nesting period.
Walking
Very short walk from the harbour parking area to the viewing platforms.
Visit notes
Puffins typically arrive around mid-April and leave around the beginning to middle of August.
