Hellisheiði Eystri
One of Iceland’s highest and steepest mountain roads, delivering enormous summer views across Vopnafjörður and Héraðsflói.
About Hellisheiði Eystri
Hellisheiði eystri connects Vopnafjörður with the Hérað area via Road 917. The narrow, steep and winding road reaches approximately 665 metres above sea level and offers exceptional mountain and coastal views. It is a normal road rather than an F-road, but its elevation means it is not maintained during winter.
Our practical tips
✓Only drive the pass when Road 917 is officially open and conditions are suitable.
✓Combine it with Skjólfjörur and Gljúfursárfoss.
✓Clear weather makes a huge difference to the experience.
