About Hverfjall
Hverfjall is an unusually symmetrical tephra crater formed by an explosive eruption around 2,800 to 2,900 years ago. The crater is roughly one kilometre across and around 140 metres deep. A marked trail climbs the side to the rim, from where the entire Mývatn landscape opens up below.
Our practical tips
✓The climb is short but steep and loose underfoot.
✓Walking the rim takes considerably longer than simply reaching the top.
✓Stay strictly on the marked path because the crater is protected.
