Lake Mývatn
Shallow volcanic lake surrounded by wetlands, pseudocraters, lava formations and some of the richest birdlife in Iceland.
About Lake Mývatn
Lake Mývatn is one of the defining landscapes of North Iceland. The lake and surrounding wetlands sit within an extraordinarily active volcanic environment containing craters, lava fields, geothermal areas and unusual rock formations. Rather than being a single stop, Mývatn is best explored as a region containing numerous separate attractions.
Our practical tips
✓Allow at least a full day for the Mývatn area if you want to visit several major attractions.
✓Do not treat Mývatn as one viewpoint — the best experiences are spread around the lake.
✓Birdlife is particularly important here, so respect nesting areas and marked paths.
