Kverkfjöll
Remote volcanic mountain range on the northern edge of Vatnajökull where geothermal heat and glacier ice meet.
About Kverkfjöll
Kverkfjöll is one of the most remarkable fire-and-ice landscapes in Iceland. Geothermal activity beneath and beside Vatnajökull creates steaming terrain, meltwater and constantly changing ice formations around the glacier margin.
Our practical tips
✓Talk to rangers about current glacier and trail conditions.
✓Do not treat the glacier margin as a normal hiking area.
✓Allow considerably more travel time than the map distance suggests.
