The Leif Erikson monument stands directly in front of Hallgrímskirkja and commemorates the Norse explorer traditionally credited with reaching North America centuries before Christopher Columbus. The monument was a gift from the United States to Iceland in 1930, marking the 1,000th anniversary of Alþingi.
