About Mjóifjörður
Mjóifjörður means Narrow Fjord, and its isolation is a huge part of its appeal. The road descends dramatically past Klifbrekkufossar before continuing along the fjord towards Brekka, Asknes and eventually Dalatangi. Historic whaling remains, waterfalls, coastal scenery and remarkably few visitors make Mjóifjörður one of East Iceland’s great off-the-beaten-track journeys.

✓Carry food and water because services are extremely limited.
✓Continue beyond Brekka towards Dalatangi if road conditions and time allow.
✓Check Road 953 before setting off because winter closure can last well into the year.
Getting there and visiting
Access
Road 953 into Mjóifjörður is a seasonal mountain road and is generally only open during summer. Check current road status before travelling.
Visit notes
Allow most of a day if driving to Dalatangi and stopping at attractions around the fjord.
