Sveinsstekksfoss
Powerful 15-metre waterfall where Fossá plunges into the deep Nykurhylur pool shortly before reaching Berufjörður.
About Sveinsstekksfoss
Sveinsstekksfoss is the lowest waterfall on Fossá and is also known as Fossárfoss or Nykurhylsfoss. The river drops approximately 15 metres through a narrow gorge before racing through pools and rapids into Nykurhylur, which reaches around nine metres deep. Local folklore says a dangerous supernatural water horse called a nykur once lived in the pool.
Our practical tips
✓Do not search separately for Nykurhylsfoss — it is the same attraction.
✓Walk a little farther above the main falls to see more of Fossá.
✓The nykur folklore makes this much more than another roadside waterfall.
