About Vopnafjörður

Vopnafjörður is the northernmost major community in East Iceland and makes a rewarding detour from the Ring Road. The village sits on the Kolbeinstangi peninsula while the wider fjord contains historic farms, geothermal bathing, coastal walking trails, black beaches, waterfalls and the spectacular seasonal road across Hellisheiði eystri.

Combine the village with Selárlaug, Bustarfell or the coastal attractions along Road 917.

The main approach via Route 85 is paved. Some attractions around the wider fjord use gravel roads or seasonal routes.
