WHY VISIT

About Borgarfjörður Eystri

Borgarfjörður Eystri is one of East Iceland’s standout destinations despite its tiny population. The village of Bakkagerði sits among dramatic mountains at the end of Road 94 and is famous for puffins at Hafnarhólmi, local elf folklore and the extensive Víknaslóðir hiking network. More than 40 hiking routes explore the surrounding mountains, deserted coves and colourful rhyolite landscapes.

FIRST-HAND ADVICE

Our practical tips

Do not visit only for the puffins — Borgarfjörður Eystri is one of the best hiking areas in Iceland.

Stay overnight if you want to combine Hafnarhólmi with Stórurð or one of the longer Víknaslóðir hikes.

Allow plenty of time for the drive on Road 94 because the scenery itself is part of the experience.

KNOW BEFORE YOU GO

Getting there and visiting

Access

Reached from Egilsstaðir via Road 94. The approximately 70 km journey crosses mountainous terrain, so winter conditions can significantly affect travel.

Visit notes

A half-day is enough for the village and Hafnarhólmi, but hikers could easily spend several days in the area.
