Bridge Between Continents
Symbolic footbridge crossing a major fissure in the Mid-Atlantic Ridge between the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates.
About Bridge Between Continents
The Bridge Between Continents spans a prominent fissure at Sandvík on the Reykjanes Peninsula. Reykjanes lies directly across the Mid-Atlantic Ridge, where the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates gradually move apart. The footbridge was built in 2002 and provides an easy way to walk through the rift landscape and symbolically cross between two continents.
Our practical tips
✓Walk down into the fissure as well as crossing the bridge.
✓This is a short stop, so combine it with Stóra-Sandvík and the Reykjanes lighthouse area.
✓A personalised bridge certificate can be obtained from selected Reykjanes visitor centres.
✓Stay on marked paths rather than wandering across the surrounding lava.
