About Litli-Hrútur Eruption Site
The third eruption in the Fagradalsfjall area began close to Litli-Hrútur in July 2023. The eruption opened another fissure north-east of the 2021 and 2022 sites and created a new cone and extensive lava field before ending several weeks later.
Our practical tips
✓Do not underestimate this hike — Visit Reykjanes currently suggests around five to six hours walking time.
✓The final section crosses rough mossy lava terrain.
✓Take significantly more water and food than for the shorter eruption trails.
✓Consider Path C if you want broader views of all three eruption areas without completing the full Litli-Hrútur approach.
Getting there and visiting
Access
Official Path E towards the Litli-Hrútur area is approximately 18–20 kilometres return and is significantly more demanding than the shorter Nátthagi routes.
