About Grótta Lighthouse
The present Grótta Lighthouse dates from 1947 and stands prominently on the tidal island at the western tip of Seltjarnarnes. Its isolated coastal setting, mountain backdrop and open Atlantic horizon have made it one of the capital area’s most photographed landmarks.
Our practical tips
✓You do not need to reach the lighthouse itself to get excellent photographs.
✓The mainland shoreline gives some of the best views of the lighthouse.
✓Check both the tide and seasonal bird closure before planning to cross.
Getting there and visiting
Access
The lighthouse can only be approached across the tidal causeway when access to Grótta is permitted and the tide is sufficiently low. Grótta is closed from 1 May to 15 July for nesting birds.
