About Grótta
Grótta lies where the Seltjarnarnes peninsula meets the open Atlantic. The protected reserve combines coastal meadows, tidal pools, rocky and black-sand shoreline and rich birdlife. A tidal causeway leads towards the lighthouse when conditions allow, while the broad western horizon makes the area one of Reykjavík’s best-known places for sunsets and northern lights.
Our practical tips
✓Check tide times before attempting to walk towards the lighthouse.
✓Never assume the causeway will remain exposed long enough for your return.
✓From 1 May to 15 July, respect the complete closure of the island for nesting birds.
✓This is one of the strongest easily accessible aurora locations close to Reykjavík.
✓Combine it with Kvika Foot Bath and a walk around the Seltjarnarnes coastline.
Getting there and visiting
Access
Grótta island itself is closed during the nesting season from 1 May to 15 July. Outside that period, access across the tidal causeway depends on the tide.
