Hafnarnesviti
Small lighthouse reached on foot through the remains of the abandoned Hafnarnes settlement.
About Hafnarnesviti
Hafnarnes once supported a community of around 100 people but gradually declined and was completely abandoned by about 1970. The French Hospital was moved here in 1939 and remained for roughly 70 years before being returned to Fáskrúðsfjörður. Today a hike to the small lighthouse passes through this evocative former settlement landscape.
Our practical tips
✓The abandoned-settlement history makes this more interesting than the lighthouse alone.
✓Remember that the French Hospital stood at Hafnarnes for around 70 years before being moved back into town.
