About Hengifoss
Hengifoss is one of East Iceland’s signature natural attractions. The waterfall drops approximately 128 metres from a towering cliff where dark basalt layers are separated by striking bands of red clay. The marked uphill trail also passes Litlanesfoss, making this effectively two major waterfalls in one hike.
Our practical tips
✓Do not miss Litlanesfoss on the way up — it is a major attraction in its own right.
✓Allow more time than the distance suggests because the outward walk is continuously uphill.
✓The red horizontal layers behind Hengifoss are one of the features that make it so distinctive.
✓Take water on warm summer days because much of the route is exposed.
Getting there and visiting
Access
The main car park is beside Road 933 in Fljótsdalur. The waterfall is reached entirely on foot from here.
Walking
Approx. 5 km return. Allow roughly 40–60 minutes uphill to reach the main Hengifoss viewing area.
Visit notes
The route climbs steadily from the car park and passes Litlanesfoss before continuing towards Hengifoss.
