About Strútsfoss
Strútsfoss is one of East Iceland’s most visually distinctive lesser-known waterfalls. It drops in two stages through a deep gorge where red sedimentary layers contrast dramatically with dark basalt cliffs. The effect has similarities to Hengifoss but the location receives far fewer visitors.

✓If you like Hengifoss but want something much quieter, Strútsfoss is an excellent alternative.
✓The colourful geological layers are one of the main reasons to make the hike.
✓Bring everything you need because there are no visitor facilities at the waterfall.
Getting there and visiting
Access
Reached from Suðurdalur in Fljótsdalur. The final section requires hiking from the designated trailhead.
Walking
Approx. 7 km return depending on the exact starting point.
