Hverir
Otherworldly geothermal field of steaming fumaroles, bubbling mud pots and intensely coloured ground beneath Námafjall.
About Hverir
Hverir is one of Iceland’s most visually dramatic high-temperature geothermal areas. Steam rises from fumaroles and mud pots across a barren landscape coloured by geothermal minerals. The surface is fragile and in places dangerously hot, making marked visitor routes particularly important.
Our practical tips
✓Stay on the paths even when a colourful patch of ground looks tempting to photograph from closer.
✓Expect a very strong sulphur smell.
✓Wind can blow geothermal steam across the walking area.
