Krafla
Active volcanic system north of Lake Mývatn containing craters, geothermal areas and immense young lava fields.
About Krafla
Krafla is one of Iceland’s best-known volcanic systems. The wider caldera contains Víti crater, Leirhnjúkur and lava created during the Krafla Fires of 1975–1984. It remains an active geothermal and volcanic landscape.
Our practical tips
✓Krafla is an area, not one viewpoint — combine Víti and Leirhnjúkur if conditions allow.
✓Snow can linger here much later than around Lake Mývatn.
