About Leirhnjúkur
Leirhnjúkur provides one of the most vivid walking experiences in the Krafla area. Trails cross geothermal ground and relatively young lava associated with eruptions during the Krafla Fires from 1975 to 1984.
Our practical tips
✓Do not stop after the first geothermal area if conditions allow — the lava landscape further along is the highlight.
✓Wear proper shoes because lava is unforgiving underfoot.
