Landmannalaugar
A spectacular Highlands landscape of colourful rhyolite mountains, lava fields, hiking trails and geothermal bathing.
About Landmannalaugar
Landmannalaugar is one of Iceland’s most extraordinary landscapes and a major base for Highlands hiking. Getting there is very different from visiting attractions beside the Ring Road and requires careful planning around roads, vehicle restrictions and seasonal access.
Our practical tips
✓Do not attempt the journey in a normal 2WD rental car.
✓Check Highland road openings on the day you travel.
✓Carry food, water and appropriate clothing even if conditions look good when you leave.
Getting there and visiting
Access
Highlands access is seasonal and involves F-roads. A suitable 4x4 is required. Some routes can involve river crossings. Never rely on static app information — check official road conditions before travelling.
Walking
Varies from short walks around the visitor area to full-day and multi-day hiking routes.
Visit notes
Conditions in the Highlands can change very quickly, even during summer.
