Loðmundarfjörður
Beautiful abandoned fjord at the southern end of the Víknaslóðir trail network, containing settlement remains and a tiny church at Klyppstaður.
About Loðmundarfjörður
Loðmundarfjörður was inhabited for centuries and had 143 residents in 1860, but the population gradually declined until the fjord was finally abandoned in 1973. Remains of farms can still be found across the landscape along with the small church at Klyppstaður. Today the fjord is an important destination on the Víknaslóðir hiking network.

✓Do not attempt to drive here simply because a map shows a road — F946 is highly seasonal.
✓For most visitors, Loðmundarfjörður makes most sense as part of the Víknaslóðir trekking network.
✓Look for the small church and traces of former farms around the fjord.
Getting there and visiting
Access
Loðmundarfjörður can be reached by hikers through Víknaslóðir. Vehicle access is possible only during the latter part of summer via F946 and requires a 4x4.
Visit notes
Road access is highly seasonal. The fjord is more commonly experienced as part of a multi-day hiking route.
