About Petra’s Stone Collection
Ljósbjörg Petra María Sveinsdóttir developed a fascination with stones from childhood and began collecting seriously in 1946. Most of her specimens came from Stöðvarfjörður and elsewhere in East Iceland. Petra opened her home to visitors in 1974, and today the house and garden form one of East Iceland’s most unusual and popular museums, with stones displayed throughout flowerbeds, terraces, cabinets and shelves.
Our practical tips
✓Allow enough time to explore both the house and garden — the collection is much larger than it first appears.
✓Many of the stones were collected locally, making this a brilliant introduction to East Iceland’s geology.
✓Look beyond the minerals: Petra also collected shells, eggs and numerous everyday objects.
