Large ravine and scree on Mount Steðji associated with stories of local residents defending Stöðvarfjörður from raiders.
About Stórakerald & Tyrkjaurð
Stórakerald is an unusually large ravine on the slopes of Steðji immediately behind Stöðvarfjörður. Local tradition says residents sought refuge there during a pirate raid and defended themselves by throwing stones towards their attackers. The rocky area below consequently became known as Tyrkjaurð, or Turkish Scree.
