Visiting Iceland in Spring (April – May)

Spring is one of Iceland’s hidden gems.

The days become noticeably longer, temperatures begin to rise, waterfalls are at their most powerful thanks to melting snow, and visitor numbers remain relatively low compared to summer.

You’ll still need warm clothing, but driving conditions are generally much easier than during winter.

Visiting Iceland in Summer (June – August)

Summer is Iceland’s busiest season—and for good reason.

With almost 24 hours of daylight, you can explore well into the evening without worrying about darkness.

Many roads, including those into Iceland’s spectacular Highlands, are only open during summer.

Summer is ideal for:

The downside is that accommodation, car hire and tours are at their most expensive, so booking early is highly recommended.

The crowds begin to disappear, accommodation prices start to fall, and the Northern Lights begin returning as the nights get darker.

The autumn colours also add a completely different feel to Iceland’s landscapes.

For many travellers, September offers the best balance of good weather and smaller crowds.

Best Time for the Northern Lights

If seeing the Aurora Borealis is your main goal, you’ll want to visit between September and March.

The darker the skies and the clearer the weather, the better your chances.

Remember, the Northern Lights are a natural phenomenon, so they can never be guaranteed—but staying for several nights greatly increases your chances.

Best Time for a Ring Road Trip

If you’re planning to drive the full Ring Road, we’d recommend:

Flights and accommodation are often cheaper than during peak summer, while many attractions remain fully accessible.

If it’s your first visit to Iceland, we’d recommend either May or September.

If your dream is seeing the Northern Lights, then September through March is your best bet.
